The game is fast, full of energy, and requires teamwork between the rider and the horse. Polo is not just a sport, it is a combination of skill, speed, and strategy.
The history of polo goes back more than 2,000 years. It is believed to have started in Persia (modern-day Iran) as a training game for cavalry soldiers. From there, it spread to other regions such as India, China, and later to Europe.
British officers in India made polo popular worldwide in the 19th century. Today, polo is played in many countries including Argentina, the UK, the USA, and Pakistan.
Polo may look simple, but it has very clear rules. Here are the basics:
Teams – Each team has 4 players.
Chukkas – A match is divided into periods called chukkas (usually 4 to 8 chukkas).
Objective – Hit the ball into the opponent’s goal to score points.
Field – A polo field is almost the size of 9 football fields combined!
Horse Changing – Players often change horses between chukkas because the game is very demanding.
A good polo pony can turn quickly, run fast, and stay calm under pressure. Most players have more than one pony and switch them during the game to keep the horses fresh and strong.
Mallet – A long stick used to hit the ball.
Helmet – Protects the player’s head.
Boots & Knee Guards – Keep the rider safe.
Ball – A small, hard ball used in the game.
The equipment is designed for both safety and performance, so players can focus on the fast action of the match.
